Bravo to all those who sent in an educated guess as to the Roman monument which inspired the Ohio State University Football Stadium. We are very impressed with your cultural knowledge! And the winner is..... First, let's talk about the answer - and it's complicated. A number of you guessed the PANTHEON (easily confused with the Parthenon in Athens). It turns out that all of you are right, according to general online consensus. However, bear with us because we contend there's another partial answer. At first glance it reminds us of the BASILICA OF CONSTANTINE OR MAXENTIUS. Of course, overall they had a Roman theme, since the Stadium is modeled on the Colisseum (as all stadia are). The "Rotunda" seems to evoke the Pantheon in some details (early 2nd century) and the basilica in other (early 4th century). Check out these photos and decide for yourself.
So to all our smart friends who participated and guessed right, here is your reward: a pasta sauce recipe as promised. This is a super-simple version, which I learned in Rome.
Artichoke Cream Sauce
1 jar marinated artichokes or artichoke bruschetta spread (e.g "Gia Russa" brand). No canned artichokes in water! If they're in chunks or halves, pour the contents in your food chopper and puree, leaving small bits.
Cook 12-16 ounces good Italian pasta with ribs to catch the sauce, like Roman rigatoni. A few minutes before the end of cooking time (al dente!), scoop out about 1/3 cup of the starchy cooking water and set aside. Drain the pasta, then pour artichoke cream into same saucepan and heat over low heat. Swish the hot water around to rinse out the jar, then add water to cream. Add 1/2 cup freshly-grated parmesan; stir to warm up sauce. Add the drained pasta back to the pan. Gently toss. Serve. Buon Appetito!
